Explore your artistic voice and creativity as you learn different techniques for drawing, painting and mixed media on a variety of surfaces. Using an art journal, you will explore the techniques; then work on canvas/paper and other surfaces of your choice when you are ready. Your instructor facilitates your creative journey by demonstrating ways to use watercolor, acrylics, pencils, pens, interesting papers and photos to create both representational and abstract compositions influenced by our environment, imagination and personal experiences. Demonstrations are designed to build understanding, skill and expertise with drawing, painting, collage and some reflective art writing. Your individual pieces may be framed, and your journal will be a work of art in itself, like a visual memoir. All levels are welcome!

In this two-day workshop we will learn to mix color through various "color studies." These painting exercises are designed to hone our perception of temperature and improve our ability to mix color accurately. We will then learn to apply the paint cleanly with an emphasis on wet-in-wet mixing directly onto the canvas. Bring a lunch for a 30 minute break each day.

Explore different ways of placing a figure in a composition. With a focus on light, color, and value, we will study techniques to paint the human face and figure, including attention to color mixing. Discussion and demonstration will enhance the students’ understanding of proportion and gesture. We will begin with small studies of a clothed model, then move on to painting the figure in a larger format with an eye toward achieving harmony in a painting. Group discussion and evaluation each day will help students evaluate their work.

Develop the visual artist's eye, transforming the three-dimensional world around you to a two-dimensional painting. Explore composition and design, seeing the world in terms of shapes, lines, perspective, and the relationship between them.
Students will paint in oil and acrylic. Landscapes will be painted from photographs and still lifes and figures will be painted from life. Emphasis is on composition, color, development of skills and information exchange.
Supply List: 1st class bring Medium or Large drawing tablet, pen or soft pencil, or vine charcoal and eraser or kneaded eraser (charcoal).

Essential instruction and portrait practice, painting from a live model using the classic method of the open grisaille, or grey. This under-painting method has been used by masters for centuries. It focuses the painter on the combination of drawing and building core values in the composition, setting the stage for the finished painting. The class will focus on the critical, early placement of features with demonstrations, discussion and critique.
